SUMMARY:Piran Days of Architecture 2025: Is Architecture Neutral
DESCRIPTION:You are kindly invited to the 42nd international conference Piran Days of Architecture\, which will take place on Saturday\, 22 November 2025\, from 10 am to 6 pm at the Auditorium Portoroz. The 2025 Piranesi Awards will be presented at 6 pm\, followed by the traditional opening of the 2025 Piranesi exhibition at 8 pm in the Monfort Exhibition hall. \nThe programme starts on Thursday\, 20 November. \nSpeakers and Piranesi jury \n  \nHonorary patron of 42nd PIDA is Anna Ramos\, director of Fundació Mies van der Rohe. \n  \nIs Architecture Neutral? \nAs architects\, we regard our field of expertise to be an autonomous discipline which is bound by its internal rules. To an extent\, this is true as we are talking about a specific discipline boasting its own history as well as methods and operational techniques. But on the other hand\, architecture affects everything\, and everything affects architecture. As a result\, it is in no way neutral but rather always situated in one place or another – physically\, socially\, and historically. If architecture were neutral\, it wouldn’t bear social\, environmental\, and political responsibility. It would be apolitical\, confined to the ivory tower of its autonomy. Being\, as it is\, situated in the world and in time\, however\, it is beholden to acting responsibly right here and right now. \nArchitecture is about research which leads to the uncovering and modification of the designated function of the existing\, rather than to the mere creation of new forms. This prompts the necessity of consideration\, which accounts for the bigger picture and acts accordingly\, too. As architects\, we must be active\, develop concepts\, and take decisions even on levels which lie outside the autonomy of the architectural profession. Nowadays\, this has chiefly to do the with the consideration on social injustice and the environmental crisis. Late capitalism is edging architecture’s artistic and social\, but also technical and scientific relevancy ever closer towards a state of crisis. Architecture is increasingly becoming a market commodity\, be it either a luxury product or cultural heritage frozen in time\, or a merciless tool employed by the capital to serve the purpose of profit-making. What is needed is a critical reflection on what architecture is\, and what are the causes and manner of its operation\, as well as its effects. \nMiha Dešman \n  \nPlease\, note that number of seats in Auditorium is limited. We kindly suggest visitors to reserve the entrance to the conference by buying the ticket in advance. In case of the sold-out conference the entrance priority will be given to pre-payed tickets.

SUMMARY:2024 Piranesi Award exhibition - opening
DESCRIPTION:The Piranesi Award is the first international architectural award in the Republic of Slovenia. It was created as part of the Piran Days of Architecture international conference\, and it is presented by the DESSA Gallery\, the Coastal Galleries of Piran and the Piranesi International Jury. It was first presented in 1989 to the Serbian architect Bogdan Bogdanović for the Dudik Memorial Park in Vukovar\, Croatia. \nThe award\, named after the 18th century Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778)\, whose family roots are said to be from Piran\, rewards the best architectural realizations created in the last two years in the territory of Central European countries: Austria\, Czech\, Greece\, Croatia\, Italy\, Hungary\, Slovakia and Slovenia\, Serbia joined in 2018\, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019\, and Montenegro in 2020. \nThe projects that are exhibited at the Piranesi international exhibition as part of the PDA conference are chosen and nominated by the national selectors of the above-mentioned countries every year at the end of October. Each selector can nominate five projects. \nPart of the exhibition for Piranesi Award is also an international (since 2008) student exhibition in which 21 European architectural faculties participate – Graz\, Spittal\, Vienna\, Banja Luka\, Mostar\, Sarajevo\, Split\, Zagreb\, Thessaloniki\, Budapest\, Ferrara\, Pescara\, Trieste\, Podgorica\, Bratislava\, Ljubljana\, Maribor\, Belgrade\, Novi Sad\, Kragujevac\, AA London. Student selectors of each faculty can nominate two projects designed in the last two academic years. \nAbout 55 architectural realizations and 42 student projects compete for the Piranesi award. The prestigious Piranesi Award\, two Piranesi Honorary Mentions and the Piranesi Student Honorary Mention are selected by an international Piranesi jury made up of that year’s PDA lecturers. The awards are presented by the honorary patron of the PDA conference. \nThe Piranesi Award was presented to diverse projects of various sizes and programs that reflect the relationship of modern architecture to the natural\, cultural\, historical and social context.

SUMMARY:Piran Days of Architecture 2024: Ethics and Responsibility
DESCRIPTION:The theme of international architectural conference Piran Days of Architecture 2024 is Ethics and Responsibility. \nPiran Days of Architecture (PIDA) is an international architectural conference with one of the longest traditions in the world.\nThe aim of the conference is to evaluate the social architectural situation and to present the most progressive and innovative ideas of contemporary architectural and spatial production which preserve cultural identity and diversity through the understanding and respect for the geographical and cultural context. \nPIDA conference is traditionally accompanied by several architectural events. Among them\, the most important is the exhibition for the prestigious international Piranesi Award\, with opening after the PIDA conference. \nEthics and Responsibility \nA constant presence in our lives\, crises serve as a reminder that there are limits to our living environment. Changes in space\, both as natural processes and as human interventions\, carry long-term consequences impacting the quality of people’s lives. The ideology of neoliberalism\, founded on individualism and selfishness while promoting competition and greed\, is the mark of our time. As much is also reflected in space\, seen by many as an opportunity for extraordinary financial gain first and foremost. The architects of Modernism strove for a different\, more just world that would ensure decent living conditions for everyone\, not just for the privileged elite. As a result\, their architecture was a synonym for optimism\, solidarity\, and universal progress\, while contemporary architecture is shaping to be a material expression of the increasing inequality. The drastic loss of respect suffered by the architectural profession in recent decades is therefore understandable. Art and architecture are more important today than they have ever been before. But only when they adopt an ethical stance to challenge the mentality which puts profit before people. \nAleš Vodopivec \ntranslation to English: Sašo Podobnik \nLecturers \n› Aleš Vodopivec\, Slovenia\n› Marta Peris\, José Toral\, Peris + Toral Architects\, Spain\n› Anja Vidic\, Jure Grohar\, Vidic Grohar arhitekti\, Slovenia\n› students\, FA Ljubljana\n› Zsolt Gunther\, 3H Architects/3H ÉPÍTÉSZIRODA\, Hungary\n› András Pálffy\, Jaborneg&Pálffy\, Austria\n› Marina Tabassum\, Marina Tabassum Architects\, Bangladesh \nPlease\, note that number of seats in Auditorium is limited. We kindly suggest visitors to reserve the entrance to the conference by buying the ticket in advance.
