SUMMARY:MATERIAL. CONTEXT. SOCIETY. Perspectives of Future Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Rethinking the architectural signpost that points us towards an interdisciplinary future of the profession striving for a common good of people and the planet.  \nAn exhibition\, a workshop\, and a round table discussion create the space for discourse about the future of the architectural profession while the exhibited projects raise questions on where we are going and what we want in our environment\, and search for tools to help us achieve a wholesome future.  \nDesigning the space for the future can be described through three main aspects which all projects have in common and are used to define quality architecture. In this project\, we call these aspects “material”\, “context” and “society”. \n \nMaterial discusses the tangible matter of future architecture. It is essential that building materials are recycled as much as possible\, that new materials are manufactured non-extractively\, that by removing them from nature\, the wider geology\, society\, or ecosystems are not harmed\, and that vernacular building techniques are maintained and used to create new methods of implementing bio-based materials. \n \nContext deals with the existing tissue of society\, buildings\, locations and areas. Tangible structures can be infused with a new programme\, existing neighbourhoods improved with new content\, and new content presented to solitary and abandoned buildings. Adaptive re-use is one of the best ways to counter energetically and materially wasteful new buildings\, as well as the degradation of cultural landscapes. \n \nSociety creates culture and accentuates the urgency of the social role of architecture and spatial planning. The role of the architect – more than just a role of an independent professional co-ordinating the building process – is the role of a mediator between agents\, inhabitants\, visitors\, builders\, investors\, society\, nature\, and the state. The most successful projects are created with the participation of the public\, by discussing the activities\, wants\, and needs. Architecture impacts the society in every environment. The question is what kind of a society we want.  \nThe three concepts merge into several subconcepts and intermediary ideas\, areas of interchange\, and new meanings. We welcome any multi-facetedness\, indeterminacy\, and eclecticism which challenges our dialogic view of the world and contributes to a more plural\, multidimensional perception and the creation of a common environment.  \nWe present projects from a wide cultural and geographic region\, and we aim to establish a wide network of reference transcending national borders. The selection of projects is somewhat arbitrary; they could be replaced by other examples. More important than a given specific project is the groundbreaking concept each of them implements\, the idea by means of which the project fosters reflection and affects the development of architecture in the future.  \n  \nPresented projects\nAssemble Studio: Folly for a Flyover\, London\, UK (2011)\, JAJA Architects: Gigantium Urban Space\, Aalborg\, DK (2018)\, Clementine Blakemore Architects: Wraxall Yard\, Dorset\, GB (2022)\, B-Architecten: Qville\, Essen\, BE (2021)\, Dratler Duthoit Architects: La Jette Kindergarten Issenheim\, Issenheim\, FR (2022)\, Kraus-Schönberg Architekten: Kindergarten Ohlstedt\, Hamburg\, DE (2012)\, BC Architects + Atelier LUMA + Assemble: Lot 8\, Arles\, FR (2020)\, Mario Cuccinella Architetti: TECLA\, Massa Lombarda\, IT (2021)\, Guinée*Potin Architects: St. Pabu Low Carbon School\, St. Pabu\, FR (2022)\, Mae Architects: Sands End Community Centre\, London\, GB (2020)\, Material Cultures: Stilt House\, Margent Farm\, UK (2019)\, Josep Ferrando Architecture + Gallego Arquitectura: El Roser Social Centre\, Reus\, ES (2021)\, Atelier Kempe Thill: Museum of Traditional Crafts\, Veenhuizen\, NL (2007)\, 51N4E: Alveoles St.-Nazaire (2018)\, New Practice: Kinning Park Community Centre\, Glasgow\, GB (2022)\, Vandkunsten Architekten Senior Coliving Balancen\, Ry\, DK (2018)\, Van Bergen Kolpa Architects\, META Architectuurbureau: Agrotopia\, Roeselare\, BE (2021)\, Architecten de Vylder Vinck Taillieu\, BAVO: Caritas Psychiatric Clinic\, Melle\, FR (2016)\, Natrufied Architecture: De Warren Coliving\, Amsterdam\, NL (2018)\, Opus Architekten: Kindergarden +e Marburg\, Marburg\, DE (2014) \n  \nThe exhibition was created at the initiative of curators architects Ajda Bračič and Maša Ogrin and produced by Zavod Kriterij. \nAjda Bračič \nArchitect\, editor and publicist. SUMMARY:11 X 2\, 3\, 4 … in a row: Terraced houses and twin houses
DESCRIPTION:You are kindly invited to the opening of the exhibition 11 x 2\, 3\, 4 … in a row: Terraced houses and twin houses\, which will be held on Monday\, October 23\, at 7 p.m. in the DESSA gallery\, Ljubljana\, Slovenia. \nThe exhibition will be open from 23 October to 14 December 2023. \nIn the selection of this year’s exhibition from the traditional DESSA series 11 x one\, we have included terraced houses and twin houses built between 2017 and 2023\, which follow the principles of sustainability intelligently and comprehensively: in terms of design\, with references to local history and with the selection and processing of materials\, they strive for harmony and coexistence with nature and the existing built space; with the offsets of individual buildings and floors\, they break up monolithic volumes and provide intimacy at home; with canopies and floor offsets\, they protect their facades from the sun\, rain and snow; with flexible floor plan designs\, they adapt to the unknown end customer.

SUMMARY:TOUCHING: Raketa and the Intimacy of the Interior
DESCRIPTION:We kindly invite you to the opening of the exhibition TOUCHING: Raketa and the Intimacy of the Interior\, which will be held on Monday\, 18 December 2023\, at 7 p.m. in the DESSA gallery\, Ljubljana\, Slovenia. \nAfter the opening of the exhibition\, we also invite you to a traditional New Year’s gathering. \n  \nSPOMINI DOTIKOV \n»Načini zaznavanja so oblike dotika.«\nJ. Pallasmaa \nV interierju se zunanji svet ustavi. Nepredvidljivost in stalne senzorične motnje zunanjosti usahnejo. Nastane zareza. In le v teh fragmentih nas spremlja minevanje – sence dni\, barve letnih časov\, ptiči in sirene. Poznati šum tekstila\, vonj lesenih tal\, nelagodje hladu keramičnih ploščic\, prostranost goste preproge in vsega\, kar se zgodi ob kaminu. Videti lom svetlobe v kristalu. Videti barve\, videti sledi bosih nog in poti senc – vse to\, preden sam prostor dobi fizično podobo. Oblikujejo prostore in predmete zanje. \n  \nProduction and organization\nGalerija DESSA\nin collaboration with\nRaketa\, a creatively driven bureau\nwww.raketa.si \nCurators\nKatjuša Kranjc\nRok Kuhar \nIntroductory text\nDanica Sretenović \nPhotographs\nŽiga Lovšin\nAljoša Rebolj \nLecture\nKatja Paladin \nExhibition design\nKatjuša Kranjc in Rok Kuhar\, Raketa \nPoster design\nKatjuša Kranjc\, Raketa \nDesign of invitation and brochure\nIvan Ilić\, 0.10 Büro \nPoster printing\nPrima IP \nPrinting of invitations and brochures\nMatformat \nVoice\nNada Vodušek \nSponsors\nMzK\, MOL \nThe exhibition is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.

SUMMARY:2024 Plečnik Awards - exhibition
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to the opening of the 2024 Plečnik Awards exhibition\, which will take place on Tuesday\, May 21\, at 8 p.m. in the DESSA gallery. The exhibition will be on display until June 13\, 2024. \nAlong with the traditional DESSA exhibition of 2024 Plečnik Awards\, a catalog presenting the award-winning projects will be published again. \n»The presenting of Plečnik Awards is a singular ritual. With the grand revealing of the works of architectural excellence from recent years\, it has taken place for 51 years … Plečnik Awards are presented to original works which\, in one way or another\, exhibit Plečnik’s ethos as they consider various contemporary societal challenges. This solemn ritual is more than just a testimony to the past; it is also a signpost directing our gaze into the future and emphasising the artistic\, technical\, and social responsibility in designing our shared space. Presenting the awards is an opportunity for the reflection upon the virtues of architecture in a dynamic environment facing numerous questions about the future our society and our environment. Going beyond the base standard\, seeing beyond the economic and spatial barriers\, seeking superior solutions\, offering new visions and a consistent precision of execution are the tenets of any kind of developing\, be it in the past\, the present\, or the future. This year’s awarded works are among those which take these premises to heart.«\, among others\, wrote this year’s jury – Matej Vozlič\, Blaž Babnik Romaniuk\, Matjaž Bolčina\, Luka Javornik and Mia Roth Čerina. \n  \nPlečnik Awards are presented by Architect Jože Plečnik Fund. \nThe 2024 Plečnik Awards presentation was made possible by the members of the Architect Jože Plečnik Fund and sponsors:\nMinistry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia\, Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Slovenia\, City of Ljubljana\nand Arcadia svetila\, Corwin\, Tosidos\, Riko. \nTo all the recipients\, Gallery DESSA hereby extends congratulations. \n  \nEXHIBITION IN DESSA GALLERY AND CATALOGUE \n2024 Plečnik Awards\n21. 5.–13. 6. 2024\nGallery DESSA \nPublished and produced by\nGallery DESSA \nGraphic design\nIvan Ilić\, 0.10 Büro

SUMMARY:DESSA 35. The First Slovenian Architectural Gallery
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the DESSA Gallery\, on Thursday\, June 20\, at 7 p.m.\, we cordially invite you to DESSA Gallery for the opening of the exhibition DESSA 35. The First Slovenian Architecture Gallery and gathering. \nOn April 17\, 1989\, DESSA architectural gallery opened its doors\, at that time with the first Plečnik laureates exhibition. SUMMARY:11 x one renovation as the first choice
DESCRIPTION:We kindly invite you to the opening of the exhibition 11 x one renovation as the first choice\, which will take place on Monday\, 14 October 2024\, at 7 p.m. in the DESSA gallery. The exhibition will be on display until December 12\, 2024. \n  \nRenovacija\, adaptacija\, dozidava\, prizidek\, prezidava\, obnova\, rekonstrukcija\, prizidava …

SUMMARY:Theoretical Practice of Architecture at Work
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to the opening of the exhibition Theoretical Practice of Architecture at Work\, which will take place on Monday\, 17 February 2025\, at 7 pm in DESSA gallery. \nTheory of architecture is a practice; that is to say\, a thinking and practical activity with a specific temporality all its own. It must always also go back\, return to the past\, to the well-constructed works of architecture – manifested in books\, articles\, built structures\, and architectural and urban projects – in order to be able to go on\, develop further. And to establish itself and act in the present such that at the same time it also opens up possibilities that allow it to continue in the future – continue in a way that is not already inscribed in the given present and the set of possibilities this present offers. This is the dimension of architectural theory that interests us in our project: its capacity to cut into the linear flow of time\, and in so doing open up the way for some new yet unimagined possibilities. \nTo be more precise\, we are interested in the capacity of architectural theory to recognize those architectural works that have succeeded in responding to their time and situation\, their historical moment\, such that they raised questions that have remained open\, unanswered; articulated problems that remained unresolved; projects started yet remain unfinished. And unanswered\, unresolved\, unfinished\, not because they were ill-conceived\, not because they did not succeed but precisely because they did succeed. That they succeeded is manifested by the fact that in and with them a certain surplus was produced\, something that has yet to be untangled and which requires further work. A surplus that appears as an open question and can\, as such\, act as both a point of support and an invitation to continue – to continue thinking and constructing architecture. \nThe aim of our project is to identify and articulate such open questions\, problems\, and projects that should in our view be (re)addressed and thought through – again; re-thought in a way appropriate to our time. That is\, they should be rethought yet again\, differently\, and more effectively. In so doing we hope to outline some points of orientation for the further work of architecture\, in both theoretical and design practice – particularly in the fractured and scattered circumstances that characterise our time and world. We will develop our project in the form of lectures\, reading seminars\, a student conference and theoretical debates; this will also serve as our final exhibit. So\, instead of objects and images we will exhibit our practice itself in the DESSA gallery. Our exhibit will be the theoretical practice of architecture at work. \nProf. dr. Petra Čeferin \nThe series of events is curated by Petra Čeferin (author of the concept and curator of the exhibition) and Uroš Mikanovič (co-curator). It will conclude with a student conference of the seminar on the theoretical practice of architecture (2024/25)\, which is taking place at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ljubljana under their mentorship.

SUMMARY:To the Fore 8: Slovenian female architects\, builders and designers
DESCRIPTION:We kindly invite you to the opening of the exhibition To the fore VIII: Slovenian female architects\, builders and designers\, which will be held on Monday\, March 10\, 2025\, at 7 p. m.\, in the DESSA gallery. \n  \nArchitecture exhibition “To the Fore VIII: Slovenian Women Architects\, Civil Engineers\, and Designers”\, prepared by the Centre of Architecture Slovenia and the France Stele Institute of Art History of the ZRC SAZU aims to shed light on a neglected part of Slovenian architectural production and provides an opportunity to highlight – from the rich architectural body of work of the 20th and 21st centuries – the works that are only rarely exhibited and showcased\, but nonetheless important\, high-quality\, and multi-layered. \nThe exhibition continues the series that was realized in recent years as part of the European project MoMoWo (Modern Movement Women) and thematically fits into the research programme Art in Slovenia at a Cultural Crossroads (P6-0061). The programme is carried out by the France Stele Institute of Art History at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and is co-financed from the state budget by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency with a view to present to the professional and general community an important part of the “anonymous” and withheld European cultural heritage of the 20th and 21st centuries\, created by the women involved in architecture\, civil engineering\, interior and industrial design\, landscape architecture\, and urban design\, i.e. the fields that are (supposed to be) the traditional domain of male professions. \nThe eight in this series of exhibitions is dedicated to the female pioneers\, the first pre-war and post-war generations of female designers who played an active role in drafting\, designing\, and leaving a mark on the environment of their time. They were the silent companions\, working in the shadow of professionally more acknowledged and better known professors\, colleagues\, fathers\, and husbands\, so that even nowadays it is difficult to determine their actual part in the design and implementation of many Slovenian architectural masterpieces. In addition to them\, this year we are also presenting a slightly younger generation of female architects who\, unlike their older colleagues\, have managed to break through the glass ceiling and successfully establish themselves in their profession. \nThe selected works are thus important project creations of several generations of Slovenian female designers which should be\, considering the conditions and the role of women at the time\, regarded and assessed using different criteria than otherwise. The exhibition has a multi-layered approach\, with a focus on the quality of works and the complexity of the idea\, revealing the creative power of the authors. It presents the works of ten female architects and designers\, i.e. from the pre-war graduates to the post-war generations as well. \n  \nJakobina (Jakica) Accetto\, 1924–1998 \nSonja Batista Trenz\, 1918–1999 \nMajda Golob Mareš\, 1949 \nZlata Jeras Pohl\, 1930 \nKatarina Pirkmajer Dešman\, 1957 \nKatja Repič Vogelnik\, 1941 \nMajda Rutar Prijon\, 1935–2001 \nNastja Sajovic\, 1942 \nJožica Strašek\, 1914–2015 \nMarijana Vodopivec\, 1944 \nSonja Završnik Podlesek\, 1937 \n  \nThe exhibition will be on display until 10 April 2025. \n  \n  \nExhibition concept: Barbara Viki Šubic\, Polona Filipič\, Špela Kuhar in Helena Seražin \nCoordinators of this year’s exhibition: Barbara Viki Šubic\, Helena Seražin\, Vesna Kamin Kajfež \nText editor: Helena Seražin \nText authors: Barbara Avbelj\, Lara Boštjančič\, Nives Čorak\, Polona Filipič Gorenšek\, Timotej Jevšenak\, Katarina Pirkmajer Dešman\, Cvetka Požar\, Aleš Prijon\, Jernej Prijon\, Lara Prijon\, Sabina Ravnikar\, Metka Rutar Piber\, Helena Seražin\, Hana Videmšek\, Barbara Viki Šubic\, Barbara Vodopivec \nLinguistic review: Alenka Klemenc in Mija Oter Gorenčič \nTranslation: Helena Seražin \nExhibition design: Barbara Avbelj in Hana Videmšek\, CAS; Andrej Furlan\, UIFS ZRC SAZU \nPhotographers: Igor B. de Graaf\, Miran Kambič\, Domen Pal\, Helena Seražin \nSources of image material: Arhiv Univerze v Ljubljani; Arhiv Vrtca H. SUMMARY:Case Study – Graphic Design for Architecture
DESCRIPTION:You are kindly invited to the opening of the exhibition\, which will take place on Monday\, 15 December 2025\, at 7 p.m. in the DESSA Gallery.\nThe opening will be followed by the traditional DESSA New Year’s gathering. \n  \nThe exhibition Case Study: Graphic Design for Architecture 2005-2025 presents an analytical overview of a segment of the creative oeuvre of visual artist and graphic designer Ivan Ilić – a work dedicated to graphic design for architecture in the period between 2005 and 2025. \nThis is an area where graphic design does not function as a support service\, but as an integral part of architectural culture\, as a communication interface between architects\, clients\, institutions\, the professional public and users of space. The selection includes visual identities of architectural offices\, project graphic images for institutions in the field of architecture\, the design of exhibition materials and editorial-graphic solutions for architectural publications. All of this provides insight into a specific area within Ilić’s design and artistic work from the 1990s onwards. \nVisual artist and graphic designer Ivan Ilić (1968) studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade and at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf\, under Prof. Jannis Kunellis. He has exhibited in more than 200 group and solo exhibitions of contemporary art and graphic design\, both in the former Yugoslavia and Slovenia\, as well as elsewhere in the world. With his innovative creative approaches\, he has established himself as one of the most prominent representatives of contemporary Slovenian fine art and graphic design. With his professionalism and the application of the highest creative standards\, he significantly contributes to raising the general level of visual culture in Slovenia.

SUMMARY:Architecture in Serbia WITHIN-WITHOUT-INSIDE: ASAP
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us on Wednesday\, February 11\, 2026\, at 5 p.m. for the presentation of ASAP – Association of Serbian Architectural Practices. A critical discussion with the founders of the three offices\, ASAP members\, will be led by the renowned Serbian architecture critic Ljiljana Blagojević. ASAP activities will be presented by its executive director\, Igor Marsenić. \nASAP – Association of Serbian Architectural Practices is a business association founded four years ago with the aim of promoting Serbian architecture and design through business networking programs\, the exchange of ideas and experiences among members\, and the establishment of dialogue within the profession and with the wider community. With its open approach to the community\, topics of professional organization\, management\, responsibility\, cooperation\, and public communication\, and above all with its projects and achievements\, the membership is profiling a new architectural practice in Serbia – new in both a business and creative sense. \nWhat architectural practices are being discussed here? Are they linked only by the business profile and common interests of actors in the private sector of architecture and design\, or primarily by their persistence\, courage\, and determination to operate in the social sphere through their practice? How should we interpret the spaces and objects\, interiors\, buildings\, and urban environments that result from this activity? \nPresentation of ARCHITECTURE IN SERBIA WITHIN-WITHOUT-INSIDE by dr. Ljiljana Blagojević\, architect\, member of the ASAP world\, about the work of the architectural offices DANILO DANGUBIĆ ARCHITECTS (DDA)\, TEN and ANTIPOD raises questions about their various creative positions in\, inside and outside the architectural scene in Serbia. How to interpret different forms of action with different starting points and sources within the spatial\, cultural and historical context of Serbian architecture? The activity of studio TEN takes place outside – WITHOUT – the architectural scene of Serbia. The work of DDA\, which is found – WITHIN – within the Serbian scene\, is in dialogue with topics that go beyond local architecture. Access to the architecture of Serbia\, its interior – INSIDE – creates an ANTIPOD in interiors\, which it shapes for new forms of global business. But those positions talk about isolated enclaves\, but about the valences of modern practices in the architecture of Serbia? \nA short presentation will be followed by a discussion with the founders of the three mentioned bureaus\, in which they will participate: \nDanilo Dangubić\, DDA https://www.danilodangubic.com\nNemanja Zimonjić\, TEN https://ten.studio\nBranko Nikolić\, ANTIPOD https://antipodstudio.com \nMore on ASAP

SUMMARY:Student Spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:You are kindly invited to the opening of the exhibition Student Spring 2026\, which will take place on Monday\, 23 March 2026\, at 7 p.m. at the DESSA Gallery. \n  \nThe Student Spring exhibition presents a selection of master’s theses in the fields of architecture\, landscape architecture\, and spatial planning\, which were created at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ljubljana\, the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Civil Engineering\, Transportation Engineering\, and Architecture at the University of Maribor\, and the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana. The projects respond in depth to the current challenges of contemporary space and society: sustainable development\, renovation of existing buildings\, quality of public space\, accessibility of housing\, climate adaptation and inclusive forms of planning. \nMaster’s theses in the field of spatial planning\, culture\, and society often offer thoughtful\, innovative and long-term sustainable solutions. They address topics such as educational institutions\, cultural programs in existing buildings\, housing models for young people\, contemporary forms of housing for the elderly and intergenerational intertwining\, and systemic landscape renovations after natural disasters and in changing environmental conditions. Despite their high professional level and versatile solutions\, most of these projects remain within the academic environment and do not reach the wider public or decision-makers. \nThe Student Spring exhibition aims to bridge this gap. Master’s theses selected by invited mentors from individual faculties are presented as relevant spatial\, social\, and cultural visions that can serve as starting points for development strategies and public policies. The presentation will be complemented by public talks and discussions with decision-makers\, representatives of ministries and local communities\, investors\, and the professional public. \nThe aim of the project is to establish a more sustainable dialogue between academic research and actual spatial development and to encourage closer cooperation between the creative potential of young architects and the processes of realization. At the same time\, the exhibition serves as an important reference for young authors and strengthens their visibility and role in shaping a high-quality\, sustainable space and society.
